NASA says astronaut Chris Williams and two crewmates landed safely in Kazakhstan on Sunday after spending about eight months in space. That is 241 days away from home, floating in microgravity, sharing a space laboratory, and watching Earth spin below.
During the mission, the crew orbited Earth 3,856 times. An orbit is one full trip around our planet. So imagine going around Earth once… then again… then again… thousands of times. That is a lot of sunrises and sunsets, because astronauts on the space station can see many of them in just one day.
But they were not just sightseeing. The crew worked on science, including research connected to cancer, experiments in space manufacturing, and repairs during spacewalks. New research, reported by ScienceDaily from the University of California, Davis, says giant sequoia trees were much more likely to survive big wildfires if their groves had earlier been treated with carefully controlled burns.
Now, that might sound surprising. Fire can hurt forests, so how could fire also help? The key words are carefully controlled. A prescribed fire is a planned fire started by trained experts under specific weather and safety conditions. The goal is not to let fire run wild. The goal is to clear some extra fuel from the forest floor, so that if a wildfire comes later, it may burn less intensely in that area.
Think of it like tidying up a messy room. If toys, blankets, and paper are piled everywhere, it is easier to trip. Cleaning up makes the room safer. In a forest, removing extra dry material can sometimes help reduce danger.

Why is that exciting? Scientists often want to know which animals live in an area. But animals can be shy, hidden, nocturnal, or easily disturbed. Nocturnal means active at night. Instead of chasing animals or getting too close, researchers may be able to sample the air and learn who has been nearby.
This kind of work is part of biodiversity monitoring. Biodiversity means the variety of living things in a place, from birds and mammals to insects, plants, fungi, and more. When scientists know what species are around, they can better understand whether an ecosystem is healthy or changing.
There is still a lot to learn. Air moves around, DNA can break down, and researchers have to be careful about contamination—when a sample gets mixed with DNA from the wrong place.
